Athena Promachos was a famous monumental statue erected on the Acropolis of Athens, crafted in bronze by the Greek sculptor Phidias around 450 BCE.
The original statue was a colossal armed female figure representing Athena in her role as the protector of the city and goddess of strategic warfare. It stood at the main entrance of the Acropolis, holding a spear and shield. Our statuette is a miniature representation of this iconic statue.
Athena Promachos embodies the warrior goddess in all her splendid combativeness. The term "Promachos" literally means "who fights in the forefront," expressing her aggressive role as Athena Areia, the deity of war. Despite her aversion to murder, fire, and plunder, she stands at the frontline in battle, leading her warriors with determination, energy, and indomitability.
