History of Zeus and Ganymede

Ganymede, the most beautiful mortal in a passage of the Iliad, is the son of Tros, founder of Troy and the Callirhoe Nymph. While guarding his father's herds, Zeus, seduced by her beauty, metamorphosed into an eagle and kidnapped her to take her to Olympus. Having become the cupbearer of the gods in the place of Hebe, daughter of Hera, he served them the nectar and ragweed that made them immortal.

To appease Tros' anger, Zeus gave him immortal mares, a vine sep and a golden cup. But Hera, Zeus' jealous wife, demanded that Zeus separate from her lover and send him back to earth. Zeus preferred to make it the constellation of Aquarius, which he placed next to that of the Eagle.

This masterpiece represents Ganymede beside Zeus in his eagle form. Ganymede is recognizable by the cup he holds in his hand. This allows him to draw the nectar from the crater and pour it to drink to the gods.

Ganymede is represented without his tunic, completely naked, which allows to admire the beauty of his body.

Ganymede and the Zeus Eagle look at each other lovingly. The two lovers nonchalantly embrace each other, Zeus delicately surrounding and caressing Ganymede's body, her lover, with her wing.

Traditionally Ganymede can also be represented kidnapped or embraced by the Eagle.
