Zeus and Ganymede by Jose Alvarez Cubero - life-size statue

This magnificent statue of Zeus and Ganymede was created by the Spanish artist José Álvarez Cubero, it was awarded at the Paris exhibition in 1804. Hence she received the first prize from Napoleon Bonaparte. She was later sent to the King of Spain and is currently at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in San Fernando.

History of Zeus and Ganymede

Ganymede, the most beautiful mortal in a passage of the Iliad, is the son of Tros, founder of Troy and the Callirhoe Nymph. While guarding his father's herds, Zeus, seduced by her beauty, metamorphosed into an eagle and kidnapped her to take her to Olympus. Having become the cupbearer of the gods in the place of Hebe, daughter of Hera, he served them the nectar and ragweed that made them immortal.

To appease Tros' anger, Zeus gave him immortal mares, a vine sep and a golden cup. But Hera, Zeus' jealous wife, demanded that Zeus separate from her lover and send him back to earth. Zeus preferred to make it the constellation of Aquarius, which he placed next to that of the Eagle.
