Grotesque ithyphallic dwarf figurine
Grotesque statue of a dwarf.
The dwarf wears a crown and carries a large tray of foodstuffs that he uses himself. It can be the caricature of a travelling merchant in a festival. He has an apron attached to the back of his neck, and a bag hung at his sides. The type is Hellenistic, but the execution is probably Roman.

A number of statuettes, some of which are caricatures, have survived the passage of time and illustrate the daily life of the city's inhabitants. These figurines are often provided with a ring, which allowed them to be worn as a lucky charm. Their success led the city's artisans to continue producing them in Roman times, and a number of these statuettes were found outside Egypt.
