In 1864 Auguste Rodin sculpted the portrait of a man from the Saint-Marcel district in Paris, nicknamed Bibi, who lived from small jobs. The stable in rue Lebrun, which he used as a studio at the time, proved impossible to heat, and during the harsh winter that followed, the portrait froze, the back of the head cracked and fell off. The work was later preserved and passed through several states. It was sent to the Salon as a mask in 1865, but was rejected because of its fragmentary shape.

The small mask of the man with the broken nose of Auguste Rodin is later than the big one. Its expressive modelling, less concerned with details, has the spontaneous character of a sketch and contrasts strongly with the realism of the large version. This small head was reused by Auguste Rodin on several occasions. It appears twice in The Gates of Hell, in the tympanum to the right of the Thinker and in the frieze of small heads. It can also be recognized in other compositions, in particular in a version of The Earth made of plaster.
