The famous marble torso, the original of which is made of marble, known in Rome since the 15th century, entered the Vatican collections between 1530 and 1536 and became one of the most admired ancient sculptures by artists to this day.

Over the centuries, this statue has been interpreted in different ways. The most common hypothesis currently followed identifies him with the Greek hero Ajax Telamonius, meditating on his suicide. It is said that during the Trojan War, the warrior became mad when Ulysses took away Achilles' arms.

The iconography was restored thanks to several figurative testimonies: the head was sadly supported on the right hand, which held the sword by which the hero would have committed suicide. This sculpture, which dates from the 1st century BC, is signed Apollonius, an Athenian artist of the neo-Attic movement who most probably drew inspiration from a bronze from the first half of the 2nd century BC.

Origin and date of the original work: Hellenistic period, 1st century BC.
Place of conservation of the original work: Rome, Vatican Museums.
