When the Parthenon was built between 447 and 432 BC, three sets of sculptures were created for its decoration: the metopes, the ionic frieze and the pediments. The metopes and the ionic frieze were part of the very structure of the Parthenon. They were not carved and then hung in place at the top of the Parthenon, but were carved on the sides of the Parthenon after its construction. These sculptures, currently quite damaged for some, destroyed or lost for others, are scattered mainly between London and Athens.
