The Age of Bronze Auguste Rodin

This sculpture was Auguste Rodin's first really important work, it was precisely this work that made him known to the general public.
Auguste Rodin already displays a perfect mastery of his art, this sculpture already prefigures in his attitude and his modelling the sculptor's passion for living nature.

Auguste Nay, a young Belgian soldier who served as a model for this work, stripped of any superfluous attributes that would allow the subject to be identified. Auguste Rodin created this work in Brussels where it was exhibited at the Cercle artistique de Bruxelles in 1877, without a title, then at the Salon in Paris, under the name The Age of Bronze, where it caused a scandal. The statue, also known as The Waking Man or The Overcome, evokes the man of the early ages. She originally held a spear in her left hand, as shown in a photograph by Auguste Rodin, but Auguste Rodin chose to remove the arm from all attributes and give the gesture a new dimension.

Accused, during his exhibition in Paris, of having moulded it directly on the model, Rodin had to prove that the quality of the model of his sculpture came from a thorough study of the profiles and not from a moulding on nature. His critics eventually recognized the sculptor's good faith. However, this scandal drew attention to Auguste Rodin and won him the commission for La Porte de l'Enfer in 1880.
