Reproduction of part of a bas-relief from Sargon's palace depicting Gilgamesh defeating the lion. Here he holds a lion struggling fiercely with one arm and without any effort. This contrast between the wild animal trying to escape and the calmness and ease with which Gilgamesh keeps it under his dominion adds to the supernatural character of the scene and the fight between them and by extension increases that of the master of the house.

Gilgamesh is a legendary being present in all the epic tales where he appears as a character out of the ordinary, by virtue of his stature and the exploits he accomplishes. He is tall, handsome and strong, and his mere appearance on the walls of Uruk would have been enough to frighten Kish's army.

Gilgamesh is a heroic figure of ancient Mesopotamia, king of the city of Uruk where he is said to have reigned around 2650 B.C. He is the main character in several epic tales, the most famous of which is the Epic of Gilgamesh.
