Roof crest is an architectural decorative element that crowns buildings above a cornice, a wall, a roof, and that consists of a motif repeated in series, generally stone carving, geometric, vegetal or zoomorphic, and used in Spain especially during the artistic periods of the Gothic and Renaissance.
It is a purely aesthetic element that modifies the morphology of the buildings, giving them harmony and a " refined " appearance. Buildings that, without their help, would lack expressiveness and the pleasure of contemplation for the senses, of the soul and of the beauty that we appreciate in architecture.

A good example of the Renaissance period is the roof crest that culminates in the palace of Monterrey in the city of Salamanca.

Another example of Gothic style is the roof crests that can be seen in the Royal Chapel of the Cathedral of Granada.

In Madrid, one of the most emblematic examples of roof crests is located in the magnificent building of the church of Las Calatrava.

Roof crests was a characteristic element of Mayan architecture, which consisted of a high construction located on the roof of the temples, which highlighted the verticality of the pyramid-temple and the idea of approaching the sky and the gods. Most of the symbolic decorative elements were applied to the roof crests.
