Virgin with Child of Cluny

RF004828

New product

The Virgin, slightly swayed, carries the Child on her left arm. She is wrapped in a long coat that covers her hair and wraps around her right arm. The child, chubby and chubby, laughing face, is half-naked. He is eagerly sucking his mother's high-placed, bouncing breast. On the leaning face of the Virgin floats an expression of dreamy tenderness.

This sculpture, the original of which is in fruit wood, now monochrome, was, like the stone sculpture of that period, enhanced by polychrome: generally the Virgin was wrapped in a blue veil over a red dress, her coat wearing a golden decoration.

The worship of the Virgin Mary plays an essential role in the religion of medieval man. Also the Virgin and Child is the most frequently represented theme in the sculpture of the 14th century. The image of the Virgin is charged in the Middle Ages with several meanings: she is the mother of Jesus Christ, but she is also sometimes portrayed as the symbolic representation of the Church; finally, she is also the Queen of Heaven, as her crown emphasizes.

However, between the 13th and 14th centuries, the evolution of spirituality in Art is reflected in the enhancement of the motherhood of the Virgin Mary and in the relations of tenderness with her child.

This new concern for humanity is noticeable in the group here reproduced: the tender gaze of the Virgin Mary, the lively and nervous attitude of the Child create a scene where the artist has happily rendered the feeling of childhood and maternal love.
