This bathing woman is named after one of its former 19th century owners. It was one of the "sendings of Rome" to Paris from Ingres in 1808, when he was a student at the Académie de France.
The young artist creates a masterpiece with harmonious lines and delicate light. This admirable naked back has haunted the artist all his life, resuming him in several compositions, including The Turkish Bath.
