Gromaire was formed in the academies of Montparnasse. His work is serious but severe.
Marked by the war of 1914-1918, he comes out strengthened in his certainties; influenced by Cézanne, he moves against the current of Cubist experiences. He knows how to keep in touch with the world, but he translates it into violently simplified forms. He said: To the deformation I oppose the affirmation of the object. The ochres, the brown ones rise from reds of blue which give them an accent whose power is imposed. He also expresses himself in etchings, watercolours and tapestry art.
