Arnulf Rainer was born in Baden (Austria) in 1929. Close to fantastic realism, he founded with Fuchs, Lehmden and Bauer the Hundsgruppe (Dog Group).

After his early discovery of American abstract expressionism (1951-1954), he became the most famous representative of the current of Austrian expressionists. The artist was introduced to engraving in 1963.

In 1981 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and also teaches in Stuttgart.
