Edgard Degas, after various drawings, had begun modelling in 1875 after a pose taken by Marie Van Goethem, who was fourteen years old on 7 June 1879 and was a student in ballet class.
This study of nude for the fourteen-year-old Little dancer is very close to the final work "dressed" and makes it possible to appreciate the mastery of Edgar Degas sculptor.
