Although modelled under the Consulate, Napoleon's bust according to the Denis-Antoine Chaudet model was adopted as an official portrait of the Emperor until 1810. It was copied in Carrara marble hundreds of copies, then reproduced in biscuit at the Sèvres factory in 1805.

It existed in two sizes: first-sized copies were few in number and reserved for very prominent figures, while those in second size were the usual complement to second-order gifts.
