Son of a Parisian goldsmith, Antoine-Louis Barye (1796-1875) began his apprenticeship in an engraver's workshop then at the Bicunais goldsmith's where he learnt all metalwork, from casting to chiselling. From this hard learning he keeps the mark in the precision of his stroke, the sharpness of his drawing.
Antoine-Louis Barye is rightly considered to be one of the most important sculptors of the 19th century and, above all, one of the greatest animal artists of all time.
