The artists of the Cyclades created a geometric art whose marble idols offer us, without doubt, the most complete forms, where abstraction, harmony of proportions, purity of volumes and lines dominate.
This long period of twelve centuries is itself marked by different stages of evolution, different "cultures", each designated by the names of the sites that were the most important sites.

The study of these marble idols has been refined to the point of distinguishing between workshops and even "master" hands. Their meaning, on the other hand, remains enigmatic: different hypotheses have been proposed and then rejected: images of the Mother Goddess, protector of the dead, effigies of the deceased? Without doubt, the function of these statuettes was not exclusively funerary, since they were not all found in the tombs and sometimes bear traces of ancient repairs suggesting a prolonged use.
