Around 1960, the merchants of antiquities appeared among them a lot of vases in the form of animals, arms and bronze figurines, as well as pieces of silversmiths, which were said to have come from the Iranian site of Amlash. It was soon discovered that Amlash was only the village where clandestine diggers came to sell the antiquities discovered by them and which actually came from the region whose major site is Marlik, in the green hills overlooking the southwestern Caspian Sea.

More info

Marlik was excavated by Professor Negahban who discovered a royal necropolis whose cultivation can be attributed to Iranian invaders from the plain of Gorgan, south-west of the Caspian Sea.
These people mingled with the natives who passed on to them the traditions of the great civilizations of Western Asia from the 13th century BC onwards.

The two populations merged and created a particularly original art. The bronzes illustrate a flourishing metallurgy, thanks to the nearby deposits of the Caucasian region and the center of the Iranian plateau. The foundrymen carried out with predilection figurines of mountain animals, in particular cervids in which the invigorating power of the deity was manifested in their eyes.
